Exclusive Trusted Magazine Q&A with Andrew Lee Miller, CEO & Founder of Growth Expertz.
How could you describe your career path in a few words?
I have spent the last 18 years helping entrepreneurs, startup founders and business owners grow their business with digital marketing strategies. I started working in Dubai with various startups and had some success at an early age, and then moved to Silicon Valley where I saw more marketing success. My teaching and message is different because I help entrepreneurs figure out marketing without needing big budgets for advertising, and instead relying on organic marketing strategies. Since 2016 I have founded GrowthExpertz marketing agency, have written a book, done public speaking around the world, and made online courses, and hundreds of videos online all for the same goal, to help more people grow their businesses without using advertising. My main business now is focusing on helping early-stage entrepreneurs get their marketing off the ground without needing huge budgets.
What was your most challenging experience and it has changed your mindset?
Workwise the most challenging experience of my career was when I was Marketing Director of a successful startup, that had tens of thousands of users every day, but the CEO was not committed to the business, and was making many mistakes. He wouldn't listen to my suggestions and eventually the startup failed leaving many people upset in Dubai. This taught me that if I want to work with people I have to interview them as much as they are interviewing me. My most challenging personal experience was in 2006, I had the death of a close family member at the time I was graduating college. This was a freak situation, and my world was still so small that it caused me to realize how short life is and completely lose my fear of anything. Without fear you are unstoppable and that realization led me to start my career working remotely in 2008 and travel to over 70 countries since then.
Based on your experiences, what skills should an entrepreneur develop in 2023?
As an entrepreneur there are only two potential outcomes. You will either succeed or not. Well if you never give up, and you can learn from every failure then there is only a finite amount of times you must fail until you will surely succeed. So with unlimited dedication and never giving up, coupled with analyzation of what is and isn't working each time you fail, slight tweaks and continued effort you WILL succeed eventually. People don't realize that.
You should ONLY focus on data, in the form of analytics, and customer feedback.
You need to be able to take risks, and react, not be cautionary and too scared.
You must PATIENT, but move quickly yourself, to be able to create something to test, get feedback, change it, create again, test again etc etc.
Based on your recent experiences, if you had one piece of advice for an entrepreneur's success in the context of 2023, what would it be?
This is a very difficult year for raising money, so I think the most important thing this year is to try and get your startup off the ground without venture capital. Focus on creating an MVP, a minimally viable product, getting some traction via organic channels without spending too much time or money and then analyzing the feedback, data and information you get from early users and customers. Lastly, you must tweak the product based on this data. You need to stay lean, create a product and get marketing traction without spending money so that you can reinvest once you make a profit. It's much harder to do it the old was of just raising a ton of capital these days, but if you can get traction for your business without needing paid advertising or big budgets, you suddenly become very attractive to investors.
