Q&A with Eduardo Alvim

Exclusive Trusted Magazine Q&A with Eduardo Alvim, Head of Product Strategy and Development @Gladwell Academy.

How could you describe your career path in a few words?

I’m happy to say that my career journey has been an enriching journey that spans a multitude of roles and industries, all converging towards my passion for the Agile mindset. It commenced within the lines of code in the area of software development, where I cultivated my technical prowess while gaining critical insights into IT processes. Over time, my professional trajectory led me organically towards the Agile landscape, driven by a fervent desire to enhance operational efficiencies and empower teams. I’ve learnt early enough that managing projects the way we were used to do, wouldn’t help us to move any further in the direction of the future, where the world would become more and more complex every day.

A significant milestone in my career was becoming the world's first Portuguese & Spanish speaking qualified Scaled Agile Framework Practice Consultant Trainer (SPCT). Which is still true, until today. This accolade underscores my unwavering commitment to promoting Agile excellence on a global scale.

I've garnered practical experience across diverse sectors, from aviation and healthcare to pharmaceuticals, banking & insurance, media, and IT. This immersion has afforded me invaluable firsthand experiences of the transformative potential of Agile practices within multifaceted organizational contexts.

Today, I stand as a catalyst for Agile dissemination through training, consulting and speaking engagements at prestigious events worldwide. My mission is to equip organizations with the knowledge and tools to harness Agile's power fully and to thrive in our rapidly evolving post-digital era.

How do you think agile practices have transformed companies over the past two years?

Agile practices have undergone an unprecedented metamorphosis in the last two years, largely driven by global events, the imperative for businesses to learn pivot rapidly. This transformational journey has been instrumental in bolstering companies' resilience and competitiveness.

Agile practices have manifested as a strategic linchpin, fostering adaptability, fortifying cross-functional collaboration, and nurturing a customer-centric ethos. As the world has immersed into remote work and digitalization, Agile provided a seamless conduit for companies to navigate these changes with agility and precision.

On top of that, the impact of Agile transcends the boundaries of IT departments, permeating all facets of business operations – from HR to Finance, passing through all areas of the business. It has empowered organizations to streamline processes, expedite product deliveries, and pivot nimbly in response to dynamic customer demands. The iterative nature of Agile has become a facilitator for innovation, propelling companies into new realms of product development and problem-solving.

As a result, Agile practices have become an indispensable compass for organizations in charting their course through ever-changing markets and needs. They are no longer viewed as an optional way of work but as a fundamental driver of growth and survival in a volatile and complex marketplace.

What successful cases of agile transformations have you had the opportunity to observe that have particularly stood out to you?

Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of witness numerous Agile transformations that have left an indelible imprint on my professional ethos. Among these, two standout cases have exemplified the sheer transformative potential of Agile methodologies, transcending industry boundaries.

One such remarkable case unfolded within the aviation industry, where a renowned company embarked on an ambitious Agile transformation journey. By embracing Agile practices, they achieved extraordinary outcomes. Maintenance downtime was drastically reduced, crew scheduling became more optimized, and the overall passenger experience underwent a remarkable improvement. This transformation not only streamlined operational efficiencies but also translated into significantly heightened customer satisfaction levels.

In the area of healthcare, I had the privilege of observing a hospital's Agile odyssey, which was undeniably astonishing. The hospital's commitment to Agile principles translated into a streamlined patient care ecosystem. It facilitated swifter decision-making processes, effectively mitigating administrative bottlenecks that had long plagued the institution. The result was a healthcare delivery system that not only improved patient outcomes but also served as a testament to the adaptability of Agile beyond its conventional IT domain.

These emblematic cases serve as a testament to the remarkable versatility of Agile methodologies, transcending industry norms and yielding tangible, far-reaching impacts. They underscore Agile's potential as a catalyst for transformative change within diverse organizational contexts

Will agile practices continue to generate interest? What challenges do you see in the context of deploying these practices?

Agile practices are poised to not only maintain but intensify their allure in the coming years. They have evolved beyond mere frameworks; they embody a cultural shift that underpins an organization's capacity to adapt, thrive, and remain competitive in an ever-evolving business landscape.

However, the path to successful Agile deployment is not without its challenges. Foremost among these challenges is the resistance to change. Individuals and teams entrenched in traditional workflows may exhibit hesitancy in embracing Agile principles fully. Effectively addressing this resistance necessitates a combination of education, cultural change, and unwavering leadership commitment.

Scaling Agile to suit the needs of large organizations presents another complex puzzle. Striking a harmonious balance between standardized practices and flexibility is paramount, and this requires a well-structured framework and an understanding of the unique dynamics of the organization.

Moreover, sustaining the essence of Agile as organizations mature remains an ongoing endeavor. It demands the alignment of Agile practices with overarching business objectives, continuous education, and a culture of relentless improvement. Achieving this balance as quick as possible, will be pivotal in ensuring that Agile practices continue to deliver on their promise as a driving force behind organizational innovation and resilience.
