Exclusive Trusted Magazine Q&A with Kristel Bauer, TEDx Speaker and Keynote Speaker on Leadership.
How could you describe your career path in a few words?
My career path has been an unexpected and incredibly rewarding journey of self-discovery and growth. If you had asked me back when I was in in college where I thought I would be career wise 20 years from then, I would have likely said practicing medicine as a Physician Assistant. I never would have guessed that I would be doing what I am today, the founder of Live Greatly, sharing my messaging as a keynote speaker and podcast host and working on my first book. My career took me from being a practicing Physician Assistant to then being a stay-at-home-mom. It then got me back into the world of medicine working in an Integrative Psychiatry practice while also becoming an Integrative Medicine Fellow. After doing some guest lecturing at a local University, I realized that I really loved educating and inspiring groups on a larger scale. I decided to leave clinical practice in 2019 to start my company, Live Greatly, to share my messaging around corporate wellness, leadership, and mindset via multiple platforms. I am now the creator and host of my global top 1% self-improvement podcast, “Live Greatly”, where I talk with the top minds about happiness, leadership, mindset, and success. I am a TEDx speaker and keynote speaker, supporting companies and organizations with leadership development, mindset, stress management and work/life balance.
What was your most challenging experience and how has it has changed your mindset?
Life is filled with unexpected twists and turns, and I believe that all experiences are opportunities to learn and grow. The hardest experience that I have had was dealing with my mother’s stage 4 cancer diagnosis which came unexpectedly and led to a lot of soul searching. When we are presented with these types of really hard experiences, it can put into perspective what is really important. We so often spend excess time and mental energy worrying about things that are out of our control and stressing about small insignificant things. We can also sometimes get stuck on autopilot, repeating old worn out patterns or behaviors keeping us from true fulfillment and happiness. Life is a gift and that experience with my mom set me on a path of not letting fear hold me back. My career is now an expression of my personal mission, and I am continuously working towards my ultimate potential.
Based on your experience, what is the key success factor for a female leader / manager?
The top key success factor for being a successful female leader or manager is having an empowering relationship with yourself. It all starts with you. Having self-awareness is necessary to clearly see your strengths, and also to recognize areas where there is room for improvement. As a leader, you are going to face setbacks and stressors. Having a healthy relationship with yourself will help you build resiliency so that you will be more likely to learn and grow from the challenges and obstacles you face. It will also make you more comfortable with receiving feedback which is key for successfully leading a group. When you have an empowering relationship with yourself this also builds self-trust and inner confidence, helping you know that you can navigate whatever comes your way. When leaders have a healthy relationship with themselves, it shows up in how they interact with others which will help with team building, company culture and more.
